Ouseburn Trust
The Ouseburn Trust was formed by a group of local people, who came together in the mid 1990s in response to the intensive large scale redevelopment of the quayside area. They wanted to protect the adjoining Ouseburn valley area from insensitive redevelopment and conserve the best of the valley’s Victorian heritage.
Leading up to that period the area had become very run down and was dominated by low added value, traditional sector industries.
The early years of the Trust concentrated mainly on physical redevelopment of the valley and improvements to the public realm. Those efforts reduced levels of crime and improved public safety, remediated Brownfield sites and generated the confidence needed for the private sector to invest.
The Trust has more recently begun to work closer with local communities to place greater emphasis on the social dimension of regeneration. The Trust has acted as a trusted broker and facilitator as well as deliverer of programmes and activities that deliver real benefits to the users of the valley and its adjacent communities. The new focus is based on a two way relationship, that uses the assets of the valley for the benefit of local communities of interest and residence. The purpose of this is to improve the amount of economic and social capital that is generated in the area.
